Cinderella Synopsis (Movie)

Cinderella Synopsis (Movie)

The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother.

Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family.

Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope.

Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her.

And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul.

It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden).

Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Lesley Gore (Singer) Dead at 68

Lesley Gore (Singer) Dead at 68

Lesley Gore, the singer of Sixties hits like "It's My Party," "Judy's Turn to Cry" and "You Don't Own Me," passed away today at a New York City hospital following a bout with cancer. Gore was 68. "She was a wonderful human being – caring, giving, a great feminist, great woman, great human being, great humanitarian," Gore's partner Lois Sasson told the Associated Press.

The New Jersey-raised Gore was just a junior in high school when Quincy Jones signed the singer to Mercury Records and produced her first single "It's My Party." The song would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963 – giving Jones his first smash single as producer – and spawn the quasi-sequel "Judy's Turn to Cry," which also sold over a million copies the same year. Amy Winehouse would later cover "It's My Party" for a Quincy Jones tribute album.

Jones and Gore would team for two more platinum singles in 1963: "She's a Fool" and the empowering, ahead-of-its-time feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me." Jones continued to collaborate with Gore until 1966, crafting singles like "Maybe I Know" and "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows." The following year, Gore would work with songwriting legend Bob Crewe on the track "California Nights" and appear on the TV series Batman as a member of Catwoman's gang.

After graduating college in the late Sixties and staying largely out of the spotlight throughout the Seventies, Gore resurfaced in 1980 when "Out Here On My Own," a song she co-wrote with her brother Michael for the Fame soundtrack, was nominated for a Best Original Song Academy Award; Michael Gore would instead end up winning the Oscar for his song "Fame."

Gore came out to the public when she served as host on a few episodes of the PBS' LGBT newsmagazine series In the Life. She released her final album Ever Since in 2005. ~ RS

Sam Smith Celebrates Grammy Wins With Burger

Sam Smith Celebrates Grammy Wins With Burger

Sam Smith celebrated his four Grammy Award wins by gorging on a burger with his family.

The 22-year-old singer snubbed the main celebrity parties after the star-studded bash in Los Angeles on Sunday night (08.02.15) to treat his mother, father and sisters to some fast food after a bash hosted by his record label Capitol Records, which is owned by Universal.

Speaking on an episode of 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', which airs today (10.02.15), after having just four hours sleep following the ceremony, he said: "It's been such a ridiculous night. I didn't want to go to any of the celebrity parties. I went to my label's house in the hills.

"And I flew my mum and my dad and my little sisters out and we all had some In-N-Out burgers and that's what we did."

Sam scooped a quartet of prizes, Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for his hit 'Stay with Me' and Best Pop Vocal Album for 'In the Lonely Hour', at the ceremony and admitted he cannot stop crying at the thought of his success.

He added: "It's unreal. I genuinely didn't think this was going to happen. It's incredible.

"I keep spontaneously crying. I start crying in the shower this morning; I'm like oh my God.

"I went to the Grammys last year and I did the carpet and no one knew who I was ... It's all very weird. My life's changed."

The star was also feeling the effects of the ceremony yesterday (09.02.15) as he took to his Instagram account to reveal he felt like he was "dying" from a hangover.

Alongside a photograph of him in bed, he wrote: "I am on another level of hungover right now. Literally feel like I'm dying haha. ~ Bernama

Grammy Awards 2015: Sam Smith wins four prizes,Beck gets best album and Obama joins in

Grammy Awards: Sam Smith wins four prizes,Beck gets best album and Obama joins in

British soul singer Sam Smith was the big winner at the Grammy Awards today, taking both record and song of the year, while rocker Beck robbed him of a sweep by winning album of the year at the music industry’s biggest night.

The 22-year-old newcomer Smith won two of the top Grammy awards for his heartbreak single “Stay With Me (Darkchild Version),” and was anointed best new artist. His debut album “In The Lonely Hour” won best pop vocal album.

“I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys,” Smith said as he accepted his gramophone-shaped trophy for record of the year.

Beck pulled off a surprise in the album of the year category, as his “Morning Phase” record beat out Smith, Pharrell Williams, Beyonce and Ed Sheeran. The record won three Grammys on the night, including best rock album.

“We made this record at my house for the most part, so I would like to thank my kids for letting me keep them awake a little bit longer,” Beck said as he accepted his trophy from R&B star Prince.

A standout moment came with Katy Perry and President Barack Obama teaming up to take a stand against domestic violence. Perry was introduced on a white stage by a survivor of domestic abuse.

Another social message came from Smith, who made an early appeal in the telecast for people to accept who they are.

“Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try and get my music heard,” Smith said. “I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music and it was only until that I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen.”

Rozita Rohaizad To Deliver Rap Version Of "Kenek-kenek" At Canberra National Multicultural Festival 2015

Singer and actress Rozita Rohaizad will sing a rap song at the Canberra National Multicultural Festival 2015 which will be held for two days from Feb 13.

The daughter of veteran actress Mariani, whose real name was Mariam Ismail, said it was a challenge for her to sing rap as she had a soft voice, but she was looking at it as a chance to prove that she was a multi-talented singer.

"My performances on February 13 and 14 will be based on the concept of 'Flavours of Malaysia' which includes traditional songs like Joget Budaya, Kenek-Kenek, Manusia and Jelingan Manja.

"The 30-minute show will be accompanied by dancers who are Malaysian students in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney," she told Bernama, here, today.

Rozita said the purpose of the festival was to showcase the different cultures from all over the world.

"I am following my aunt's footsteps (the late legendary singer/actress Saloma) as she sang in Australia in 1958, and I did not expect to be performing in the same country," said Rozita, who will be wearing traditional costumes designed by famed fashion designer, Salikin Sidek.

Commenting on being selected to go to Canberra, Rozita said she had submitted her portfolio on her singing career to her representatives in Australia before being selected to represent Malaysia at the carnival.

Rozita began her career in 1978, singing songs by composer Ahmad Nawab.

Among the songs in her album are Hari Yang Kunantikan and Kekal Abadi, while her recorded singles are Kenek-Kenek and a Hari Raya song, Raikan Lebaran.

Romantic thriller 'I' becomes Tamil cinema's biggest release

With Tamil superstar Vikram and British model-turned-actress Amy Jackson headlining, "I" is a sell-out success in India with a 200-screen release planned for the USA.

Boasting creature effects from Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop and animatronics by Stan Winston Studios, "I" is the "biggest-ever release for a Tamil-language film" following its January 14 release, according to Deadline.

Vikram plays three separate but linked characters: a bodybuilder, a model and a hideous hunchback.

Jackson's Diya, a supermodel in her own right, falls in love with Lee, the model, not realizing he is actually muscleman Lingesan in disguise.

US distributor Aascar Film has "I" rolling out across 200 theaters, while 12,000 dates are planned across Asia, after a good proportion of filming took place in China.

Its January 14 debut coincided with Tamil harvest festival Pongal, and lukewarm reviews did not prevent "I" from booking a record 6,500 screen opening.

Spotify rockets to 15 million paying users

Spotify rockets to 15 million paying users

STOCKHOLM: Swedish music streaming provider Spotify says it has 15 million paying subscribers, boosting claims that its revolutionary and controversial model can work.

The expanding startup said late Monday it had added 2.5 million subscribers since November amid widespread reports that the unlisted company was going public.

Spotify has become a major power broker in the music industry since its US launch in 2011, drawing criticism from stars like singer Taylor Swift and propelling lesser-known artists into the spotlight.

The company's two-tier service allows users to stream an extensive catalogue for free with audio and display advertising, while those who subscribe pay eight to 11 euros (nine to 12 dollars) a month for ad-free music streaming.

Mobile and smartphone users, however, have to pay to be able to choose tracks.

At the end of 2014, Spotify had 60 million "active users" of whom 15 million were paying subscribers, the company said.

While the unlisted company does not disclose its finances, Spotify has said that it keeps 30 percent of its revenues, while 70 percent goes to artists and rights holders.

The company, which has entered markets in Europe, North and South America and Asia, has been criticised for not pay enough to artists.

In November US star Swift pulled her catalogue from the service, citing low compensation.

Spotify founder Daniel Ek responded that his company provides an alternative to listeners downloading music online for free.

"Piracy doesn't pay artists a penny -- nothing, zilch, zero," Ek wrote on the company's website.

"Spotify has paid more than two billion dollars to labels, publishers and collecting societies for distribution to songwriters and recording artists," he added.
