'Underdogs' featuring Nicholas Hoult and Ariana Grande

The original film previously won a Goya Award for best animated feature.

Underdogs, the English-language version of Juan Jose Campanella's award-winning animated feature is nearing release, with an official trailer that anticipates availability in April.

Matthew Morrison of Glee and What To Expect When You're Expecting voices Jake, a noodly foosball fan who finds himself at the center of a hostile land grab.

Pop star and actress Ariana Grande is the fashionable, strong-minded Laura, while X-Men star Nicholas Hoult finds a mean streak to become Ace, the town bully who returns as a star athlete to bulldoze happy memories and create a massive stadium in his own honour.

Jake is given one last chance to save the town, but only if he can somehow muster a team to beat Ace and his superstar athlete friends on a real soccer pitch – and that's where his old foosball table friends come into play.

Campanella's Argentinian original, Metegol, took the Goya Award for Best Animated Film, as well as the Silver Condor for Best Sound from the Argentinian Film Critics Association and Best Adapted Screenplay from Argentina's Academy Awards.

The film’s North American release, distributed by Weinstein, will mark another major dub for Underdogs, and a second English-language edition.

Previously, it had been released in Britain with Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Buffy The Vampire Slayer icon Anthony Head and The White Queen supporting actress Eve Ponsonby in the lead roles. — AFP Relaxnews
