QZ8501: The plane would be out of fuel now

The missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 would have ran out of fuel by now if it is still flying, says Djoko Murdjiatmo, acting director general of Air Transport in the Ministry of Transportation.

Indonesian newspaper agency, detikNews quoted Djoko as saying, “If we speak of fuel, it is estimated that (fuel) has run out now. The fuel was enough to fly a maximum of 4 hours 30 minutes.

“The flight lost contact at 6.17am (Indonesia time). It lost contact after one hour from departing time,” he said.

Djoko added that at the moment, he did not want to make any assumption other than the flight had lost contact.

The last position where the flight lost contact was between Pontianak and the Pacific Islands, however Djoko was not able to confirm the exact position.

Flight QZ8501 was scheduled to arrive at 8.30am in Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, when the Jakarta Air Traffic Control lost contact at 7.54am.
