The Country Has Lost A Very Respected Religious And Political Figure - Ahmad Maslan

The country has lost a religious and political figure who was very respected by all in the country after the passing of former Menteri Besar of Kelantan Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

While conveying his condolences to Nik Aziz's family, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said all the contributions and sacrifices of Nik Aziz, especially during his 22-year tenure as Menteri Besar of Kelantan would always be appreciated.

"I have personally served in Kelantan with Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed for seven years from 1993 and I saw for myself how he (Nik Aziz) had served as Menteri Besar of Kelantan during the time.

"Whatever the views of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) people are towards him (Nik Aziz), we are still considered as fellow Muslims and we respect and value whatever he has done especially in Kelantan," he said.

Ahmad was speaking to reporters after visiting the construction site of the Taman Midah MRT (Mass Rapid Transport) station here today.

Ahmad, who is also Umno information chief, described Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's action of heading to Kelantan to pay his final respects to the PAS spiritual leader as very positive.

Nik Abdul Aziz, 84, died at his home in Pulau Melaka, Kota Baharu, Kelantan at 9.40pm last night, around an hour after returning from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian.

He was being treated at the hospital since Jan 19 for prostrate cancer.

Meanwhile, Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said Nik Abdul Aziz was a leader who had done great service, not only in Kelantan but also at the national level when he served as a parliamentarian.

As a leader, he said, Nik Aziz had contributed a great deal to the country and had been a stalwart in the nation's political arena.

"I convey my condolences to the family of Nik Abdul Aziz, especially his son Nik Abduh who is also Pasir Mas parliamentary member," he said when met after handing out the letters of appointment for Risda Community Developers at the Institute of Rural Advacement (Infra) in Bangi, near here today.
