Romantic thriller 'I' becomes Tamil cinema's biggest release
With Tamil superstar Vikram and British model-turned-actress Amy Jackson headlining, "I" is a sell-out success in India with a 200-screen release planned for the USA.
Boasting creature effects from Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop and animatronics by Stan Winston Studios, "I" is the "biggest-ever release for a Tamil-language film" following its January 14 release, according to Deadline.
Vikram plays three separate but linked characters: a bodybuilder, a model and a hideous hunchback.
Jackson's Diya, a supermodel in her own right, falls in love with Lee, the model, not realizing he is actually muscleman Lingesan in disguise.
US distributor Aascar Film has "I" rolling out across 200 theaters, while 12,000 dates are planned across Asia, after a good proportion of filming took place in China.
Its January 14 debut coincided with Tamil harvest festival Pongal, and lukewarm reviews did not prevent "I" from booking a record 6,500 screen opening.
