Melaka-Manipal Medical College (Manipal University)

Melaka-Manipal Medical College (Manipal University)

For those seeking a medical or dental school, Melaka-Manipal Medical College (Manipal University) is one of the first institutions that parents and students look at.

Melaka-Manipal, or MMMC, was named a Superbrand in medical education, and continuously rated as a Six-Star Institution for its medical programme by the Education Ministry (MyQuest).

MMMC's Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) are so popular that students apply way ahead of the application deadlines to improve their chances of getting into the college.

Applications for BDS, for instance, though just in its fourth year of being offered, are over-subscribed by more than 100 per cent.

Those who have been through other pre-university qualifications find themselves at a loss for a while when they get into these degree programmes, and take some time to settle to strange terms and conditions.

MMMC launched the Foundation in Science (FiS) programme in 2012, which is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.

FiS is purpose built to prepare students for their degree studies, and allows students to delve into the basics of subjects such as Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmacology and Genetics, before they get into the MBBS or BDS.

Former FiS students now doing their MBBS and BDS studies in Phase I at the Manipal campus gave approving feedback of the FiS. An advantage of enrolling for the FiS programme at MMMC is that it guarantees entry into MBBS and BDS programmes.

However, the guarantee remains only as long as the students meet the minimum entry grades set by the Malaysian Medical Council and Malaysian Dental Council.

This 12-month pre-university programme is no walk in the park, but those who have completed the FiS revealed a great sense of accomplishment, and students felt confident in moving up to their medical studies.

This three-semester foundation programme is conducted in Bukit Sebukor-Bukit Baru in Malacca.

With three annual intakes (January, April and July), MMMC has restricted its enrolment for the foundation to 100 students for each intake.

This limit helps in upholding the standard of the programme with the student-teacher ratio.

The young, energetic and passionate lecturers here offer outstanding and fun-filled informative lessons.

For accommodation, the single air-conditioned room with attached baths is comfortable and is in high demand.

There are three food outlets on campus. Sports facilities such as gym, tennis court, futsal field, basketball court along with swimming pool are provided, and the college encourages students to participate in games, sport and co-curricular activities.

Students and parents are invited to visit the MMMC campus.
