Reasons why pregnant women should eat chocolate

Why pregnant women should eat chocolate
There seems to be great reasons why pregnant women should treat themselves with chocolate. This is because these luscious treats are found to improve a pregnant woman's condition by preventing certain complications including pre-eclampsia. According to studies, chocolate can not only relieve a pregnant woman's stress levels but also makes happier babies.

Dark chocolate can help prevent pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia is one among many causes of premature birth which also claims the lives of many babies. This condition occurs in pregnant women and is often characterized by high blood pressure. When a pregnant woman's blood pressure rises, this can lead to convulsions. It may also lead to blood clotting as well as cause damage in the liver. In some cases, pre-eclampsia may also cause the kidneys to fail from functioning.

According to the reports from the Annals of Epidemiology however, the theobromine content in cocoa can help prevent the condition. Research from Yale University concludes after questioning dietary habits of 2,500 pregnant women that those who eat chocolate regularly are 50 percent less likely to suffer from pre-eclampsia during the pregnancy.

Chocolate aids in proper blood pressure regulation

Cocoa, which is used to make chocolate, contains theobromine which aids in proper regulation of blood pressure among pregnant women. This component in chocolate can help maintain blood pressure by aiding in the dilation of the blood vessels.

Chocolate makes happy babies

Researchers in Finland also claim that chocolate can affect a baby's behavior. The New Scientist magazine reports that stressed pregnant women who indulge in chocolate are more likely to give birth to happier and livelier babies. This was concluded after asking 300 pregnant women. The researchers observed great differences between pregnant women who ate chocolate during pregnancy to relieve stress and those who didn't.

The expectant mothers who snacked on chocolate during pregnancy report that their babies are lively and happy. The babies also respond well to new situations as compared to the babies of women who did not eat chocolate during pregnancy. And this result is linked to the chemicals contained in chocolate, particularly phenylethylamine. It is believed to be passed on from the mother to the child in the womb.

Chocolate contains good antioxidants

These sweet treats are rich in flavonoids which are believed to contain potent antioxidants. Pregnant women can benefit from the antioxidant properties of flavonoids specifically in improving immunity. It can also fight of certain cancers and aid in the cardiovascular system.

Chocolate has iron, magnesium and other nutritional contents

Magnesium is known to help significantly with fatty acid metabolism. Women can benefit from these nutrients contained in chocolate during the duration of their pregnancy.

Chocolate can prevent heart disease

Dark chocolate's ability to prevent heart disease can be attributed to its antioxidant properties. As a general rule, the higher quality and the darker the chocolate is, the better it is for pregnant women, and for everyone else for that matter.

Chocolate can help pregnant women manage weight and reduce cholesterol levels

Pregnant women should choose the kind of chocolate that is low in fat and sugar. Dark chocolate, when consumed moderately, can help pregnant women by reducing cholesterol.

Chocolate relieves stress

The bottom line is chocolate is comforting and can no doubt improve a pregnant woman's mood. However, anything in excess can be harmful rather than beneficial. So, pregnant women should consume chocolate in moderation.

What to Expect From The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

What to Expect From The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

If Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey wasn't long enough for you, then we have some goods news. The filmmakers have revealed some of the scenes you can expect to see in the extended cut of the movie.

"You are going to get some serious Dwarvish disrespect of the elves at Rivendell," director Peter Jackson told Empire.

"You are going to get more of Hobbiton," said producer/co-writer Philippa Boyens. "We always wanted to wend our way through Hobbiton, but in the end Bilbo has to run out of the door."

"You are going to get more Goblin Town, and the Great Goblin singing his song," said Fran Walsh. "It is a great song, but it was just another delay in terms of moving the story along."

"We are putting things in the extended cut that are going to play straight into the second film," Jackson continued, "like this character Girion, who is defending [the city of] Dale using black arrows against Smaug. And the black arrows play a part in an ongoing story, for they are the one thing that can pierce the dragon's hide...There are also issues with [king of the elves] Thranduil. We get some of the reason why he and the dwarves had a falling out - to do with these white gems..."

The extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released this November, just in time for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX theaters on December 13.

Art Competition: Malaysia through The Eyes of The Artist

In conjunction with the Malaysia Contemporary Arts Tourism Festival 2013, Resorts World Genting (RWG) is organising an art competition themed Malaysia through The Eyes of The Artist.

The competition, which ends on July 8, is dedicated to young artists aged between 18 and 25 years old, as well as disabled artists. Its objective is to create an avenue for the artists to translate their views of Malaysia into paintings or sculptures.

A prize giving ceremony and exhibition displaying the submitted paintings will be held from Aug 3 to 14. This is the second year RWG is holding the event, after last year's highly successful competition which was only for the disabled then.

Malaysia has a vibrant and dynamic contemporary art scene, derived from our diversity of cultures. There is a growing number of young artists coming into the art scene, and I foresee our country one day becoming known as an outstanding venue for art, said Genting Malaysia Bhd senior vice-president of public relations and communications Datuk Anthony Yeo.

There are two sets of fabulous prizes for winners in the handicapped and youth categories. The grand prize of RM10,000 comprises RM6,000 cash and a Star Cruises holiday package for two. The second prize worth RM6,000 comprises RM3,000 in cash and a three-day, two-night holiday in Resorts World Sentosa inclusive of two tickets to Universal Studios. The third prize of RM3,000 comprises RM2,000 cash and a three-day, two-night holiday at Awana Hotel in RWG inclusive of two Freeze show tickets.

Consolation prizes for five participants from each category includes a cash prize of RM500 each and a two-day, one-night stay for two at Awana Hotel.

For art pieces, contestants are required to submit their works in the form of drawings, paintings, sculptures or printmaking. Two copies of entry forms must be accompanied by a short statement by the artist of not more than 50 words describing the submitted work.

Registration and entry forms are now available online at www.rwgenting.com or www.facebook.com/resortsworldgenting.

Registration forms should be submitted before June 30 to publicrelations@rwgenting.com.

Participants will be invited to the prize giving ceremony on Aug 3 when the winners will be revealed.

The participating artworks will be available for sale during the art exhibition from Aug 3 to 14. Selected works will be put up for charity auction. Ninety per cent of the sales profits will be channelled to a welfare establishment selected by the organiser.

The judges for the event are Philip Wong, the founder of Artseni Gallery who is currently working on an international art exhibition; art curator Puan Zanita Anuar who is director of Museums Innovation Division; and writer Ooi Kok Chuen who is the deputy organising chairman of Art Expo Malaysia.

Submissions of art works should reach Resorts World OneHub, Lower Ground Floor (B6), Wisma Genting, Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala Lumpur by July 8, 2013.

For details about the competition and complete rules and regulations, call 03-6101 1118 or visit www.rwgenting.com or www.facebook. com/resortsworldgenting.

Instagram launches video

Video is now on Instagram for iOS and Android

Facebook unveiled a highly anticipated video feature for its popular Instagram photo-sharing app. The new feature will be a rival to Twitter's popular Vine service.

The Instagram video can be up to fifteen seconds long, a length Systrom said the company settled on after experimenting with others and having a “Goldilocks moment” when it tried fifteen seconds.

The fifteen seconds can be made up of multiple clips–as in Vine, the camera only shoots when you hold your finger on the shutter button.

Instagram is also introducing a mode called "Cinema" that acts as a way to stabilize footage.

Users can also choose a cover photo for their videos, which will appear in the stream as a regular photo.

Celebrity Chef Nigella Lawson - Domestic Violence Incident

An UK tabloid has published images in which Millionaire art collector Charles Saatchi can be seen squeezing the throat of his wife and celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson.

Images published in Britain's Sunday People was taken while the couple were dining at Scott's in Mayfair restaurant, News.com.au reported.

Onlookers told the publication that the couple, who have been married for 10 years, were having a heated argument during which the star was reduced to tears.

The 53-year-old TV chef looked frightened in the picture as her 70-year-old husband tightly placed both hands around her throat and then appeared to squeeze several times.

He reportedly used both of his hands to grasp the lady's neck for four times, after which he pinched her nose before he pushed both hands in her face.

The source said that neither the staff nor other diners intervened to stop the row.

Saatchi then reportedly stormed out of the restaurant to a waiting car while the chef was seen crying as she held a hand to and walked towards the vehicle. (ANI)

Erin Brady, winner of the Miss USA 2013 pageant

Erin Brady beat out 50 other beauty queens in swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions to win. In the pageant's final moments, Miss USA 2012, Nana Meriwether, relinquished her crown to the Connecticut native, who will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow on Nov. 9.

“Oh my god,” Brady repeated in disbelief during the crowning.

Before she was announced as the winner, Brady showed off a few dance moves and strutted down the catwalk in an orange bikini to a performance from the Jonas Brothers, who played during the swimsuit competition.

Final questions were based on current events, and the Central Connecticut State graduate was asked if she believed criminal suspects should be subjected to DNA tests following arrest, in light of the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold them.

“I would agree that if somebody is being prosecuted and has committed a crime that is that severe, that they should submit a DNA test,” she told the judges. “If we can come one step closer to finding who’s done it, we should do so.”

She also gave her take on the challenges social media has presented to young people.

“I think that unfortunately everybody today has resorted to tweeting or sending text messages,” she said. “Verbal communication is something everybody is lacking. I’m a people person, and I know I’d rather shake your hand than send a text.”

Brady, who revealed she has an interest in tropical fish, is a financial accountant in Hartford, Conn., and she plans to get her MBA in the near future, according to the Miss USA website. She would also like to advocate for the children of substance abusers, as she grew up in a home with alcohol abuse and found few sources of outside support available to her.

As Miss USA, Brady will get posh digs in New York City, and an opportunity to travel the world while promoting the organization and acting as a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness.

First runner-up was Miss Alabama, Mary Margaret McCord, while Stacie Juris, Miss Illinois, took second runner-up.

Lim Wei Tiong,TV cooking show host attacked and robbed

A TV cooking show host was attacked and robbed by a group of men armed with sticks outside a condominium near Tropicana here.

Lim Wei Tiong, 27, who works with Astro, was attacked when he was about to visit a friend at a condominium along Jalan Tropicana Utama on Monday night.

He and a friend had gone separately to a mutual friend's place at about 11pm when the incident occurred.

“It all happened so fast. One minute I had parked my car and got out, the next minute I was surrounded by a group of motorcyclists armed with sticks,” he said at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) yesterday.

Lim said the men hit him on the head and grabbed his bag containing his wallet and handphone.

“I fell to the ground but they just continued hitting me,” he said, adding that his friend who witnessed the incident was too scared to come to his aid.

Lim said the next thing he remembered was being in an ambulance. He suffered a broken arm and lacerations to the head.

“Luckily, the robbers didn't take my car keys,” he said.

Last October, an Astro Awani newscaster was attacked and robbed when she was being driven home by her husband.

As they got out of the car, three men on motorcycles approached them, one armed with a grass cutter.

A brief scuffle ensued when one of the robbers opened the front passenger door, but they snatched her bag and fled.

The husband gave chase for about 4km before ramming into the suspects' motorcycle near the Maluri Complex. Two of the suspects were caught while one managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed, who visited Lim at the UMMC yesterday, said police were working on identifying the culprits.

He urged those with information to contact the police hotline at 03-2052 9999 or the nearest police station.

Ipoh International Run on July 7

Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said the Ipoh International Run 2013 will be the third mega event to be held after Ipoh International Starwalk 2013 on June 16 and Ipoh’s inaugural International Waiter’s Race on June 29.

He said the run, which would be held on July 7, is divided into 12 competition categories, which caters to participants of all ages and experience.

“We are targeting 17,000 participants this year, and we have already registered 15,000 of them,” he told reporters during a lunch at Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, on Tuesday.

The registration for the run ends on July 1, he added.

Roshidi said the total prize, that mainly comprises cash amounts up to RM100,000.

He said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was expected to flag off the event at the Stadium Indera Mulia.

Roshidi said the council was targeting between 500 and 800 runners from Kenya, Nigeria and Thailand for the international category.

He said the council was currently promoting the event in various cities in southern Thailand such as Hatyai, Songkhla, Krabi, Phuket and Satun between June 4 and June 8.

“We would be handing over the entry forms to the mayors and governors of the cities,” he said.

To encourage more participation of runners from the cities in southern Thailand, Roshidi said he would award RM1,000 to any municipalities or groups that could bring in more than 50 participants to join the Ipoh International Run 2013.

Masjid Ubudiah (Ubudiah Mosque), Kuala Kangsar, Perak

Masjid Ubudiah (Ubudiah Mosque)

Masjid Ubudiah - ranking high on the list of Malaysia's most beautiful mosques, the Masjid Ubudiah (or Ubudiah Mosque) stands proudly and majestically in Kuala Kangsar, with its golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight, from near and afar.

Built in 1917 during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul'adzam Shah 1, the Masjid Ubudiah is located beside the Royal Mausoleum on Bukit Chandan. It was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days.

The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties. Work was interrupted several times, once when the Sultan's two elephants ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles, and another time when World War 1 broke out.

The mosque was finally completed in late 1917 at a total cost of RM200,000- quite an astronomical figure for those days. It was officially declared open by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamtullah Shah, successor to Sultan Idris. This imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan, the Land of Grace.
