How to write effectively

How to write effectively

EFFECTIVE writing takes time, perseverance, and practice; but with a good approach and determination, you can turn your creative desire into concrete steps to achieve your purpose in writing. To get past the point of just sitting there, there are a few things you can do, to make sure you are writing effectively.

Here are 10 tips to effective writing.

1. Pull out the keyword list that you have created for whatever niche, or topic you are going to write about.

2. Make sure you have a specific purpose in mind. Ask yourself: "What am I writing for? Is it for a blog or maybe an article submission site? Am I trying to sell something or sell me? Am I trying to get customers or traffic?" It is important to know what your purpose is.

3. Know who you are writing for. You may do a variety of writing, and each group you write for may need something different from you. Is it information that you are trying to impart, or are you solving a problem? Should you write in a laid back style, or a more sophisticated way? You need to know who you are writing for before effective writing can be a part of your article.

4. Spend most of your time writing an effective article title. This is the most important part. If they do not like the title, they won't read the whole article. You want to grab their attention and make them want to read what you have to say. Think in terms of what the article can do for them?

5. Write a simple outline. It will have the title, introduction, thought, and each paragraph that comes from that. Then make sure your ending has the same points as the introduction to complete the circle.

6. Write bullet points of important things you want to share. Start your introduction with a strong benefit and build upon it. Never wait until the end to share something vital, as they may never get there.

7. Do not use a bunch of big technical words or any sarcasm or insinuations. People read to get an answer, not to figure out what you are trying to say.

8. Write as if you are talking to a friend and that you really want to help them. Be yourself, and write about things that you want to hear and know, if you were the one doing the reading. It is important to be familiar and warm, letting them know that you understand in what they are going through. Never write down to someone.

9. Readers tend to get bored easily, so keep your paragraphs short and simple. Give them the information they seek easily, so they don't need to hunt for it.

10. The last thing is to use a good word processor, and fix the errors. You should proof read your copy until you almost have it memorised, and then get someone to read it again to spot the mistakes.

Remember that practice makes perfect, especially in effective writing. There will come a time when article writing becomes easier; however, effective writing will need the steps as outlined above.

Govt aid plays big part in helping people

Govt aid plays big part in helping people
The government plays a pivotal role in offsetting the rising cost of living for middle- and low-income groups by giving financial aid to them.

The Rising Cost of Living National Key Results Area (NKRA) findings stated that households earning RM3,000 and below a month were given a one-off RM500 under the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) programme.

Last year, RM1.4 billion was given out under the Kebajikan Rakyat 1Malaysia (KAR1SMA) programme to underprivileged groups.

Senior citizens, the disabled, single parents and widows of police and military personnel received RM100 to RM250 under this scheme.

Another achievement under this NKRA was the government's ability to reduce education costs.

Students enjoy free schooling after the government abolished school fees for the first time.

Through the Back-to- School Incentive programme, RM533 million was distributed to 5,331,207 students.

Under the 1Malaysia Book Voucher programme, tertiary students received RM200 each.

Under this scheme, RM225 million book vouchers were given out.

The introduction of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia, Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia (MR1M) and Klinik 1Malaysia ensured that basic goods and services remained affordable.

Kedai Kain 1Malaysia offered affordable clothing and textiles.

As of December last year, four shops had been set up, out of a targeted seven.

MR1M, which has more than 2,000 outlets participating in its programme, offers breakfast and lunch at RM2 and RM4 in the peninsula.

However, restaurants participating in MR1M in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan charge RM2.50 and RM5.00 for breakfast and lunch.

As of Dec 31, 168 Klinik 1Malaysia were set up to provide free medical care.

Each programme achieved, if not exceeded, its targeted key performance indicator and played a role in managing the rising cost of living. ~NST

Michael Jackson's Children Are All Actually Named Michael

Michael Jackson certainly lives on through his three children.

Prince, 16, Paris, 14, and Blanket, 11, have done their best since their father's tragic passing to maintain some sense of normalcy (Prince's TV gig, Paris' cheerleading) while carrying on the family name with pride. But did you know they also carry their famous father's first name with them, wherever they go?

The three have become such household names (well, there aren't that many "Princes" and "Blankets" out there), that it's easy to forget each child is actually named "Michael." That's right: each child. As in, all three.

Seems like Michael really wanted us to know they were his ...

With Prince, his firstborn with Debbie Rowe, the king of pop flat out went for it with Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. (also known as "Prince Michael").

With his second child and only daughter, he got a little more creative and gave Paris a hyphenated first name to include his own: Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson.

Then with baby Blanket, Michael just kind of threw it all in there, names, nicknames, the works -- hence Prince Michael Jackson II

------------------

Simply titled The Lighter Side Of Life, the show is presented by The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat.

Besides Life Sdn Bhd alumni such as Patrick Teoh, Andrew Tan, Shamaine Othman, Ian Chow and Ariff Akhir, there will also be first timers, including Ashraf Zain, Douglas Wong and Lex Laskhman.

For the newbies, the basic concept of telling a personal story is an exciting challenge.

"I'll be sharing my funny experiences in boarding school during Form 4 and 5 when I was transferred to Kelantan where I received the culture shock of my life," said KL-lite Ashraf.

On the other hand, Douglas will tell a story about fortune telling.

"Getting your fortune read is a very Chinese thing to do and I'll be sharing my tale in Cantonese about my experience last year. It was quite funny," said Gombak-born Douglas, who has been steadily working in the Chinese theatre scene.

As part of The Joker Trio, which includes Season Chee and William Yap, he will also be appearing in the upcoming production of Laugh Chinese Style in April.

According to Douglas, the very different nature of Life Sdn Bhd was what got him interested in the show.

"When we act, we are given a role or a character so we feel very secure while acting in a regular play but now we have to be ourselves, standing onstage alone to tell a story and that's scary for me," he said.

Ashraf, who has done a lot of improve with the experimental group AIIA (Artificially Intelligent: Improvholics Anonymous) agreed.

"I'm always in an ensemble onstage so being alone now to share my story in the intimate setting of Life Sdn Bhd is a scary but good experience," he said.

He is part of theatre comedy sketch ensemble Project Disko Baldi and will be coming up with a TV series for the funny show.

"We're currently writing material for 13 episodes of Projek Disko Baldi that will be shot in April. Hopefully it'll be aired in July on 8TV," he said.

Faridah added that Life Sdn Bhd is almost like a stepping stone for those involved to do all sorts of other things.

"It's nice to bring in people from different quarters and I think telling a funny story is not that easy," she said, adding that the audiences of Life Sdn Bhd have always been very warm.

"They love the experience and they're with you all the way, which I find very heart warming," she said.

Lex's past two contributions to the series (abuse and human trafficking) was as a choreographer.

"I'm very excited this time to be telling a story about food, a very Malaysian thing," he said, adding that it's about his experience with a certain foreign food.

For The Lighter Side Of Life, Lex explains that the stories are of ordinary things that people can relate to or have experienced but told from a different perspective.

"It is basically looking at life itself, both real life and Life the show, and the idea of just inspiring each other through the stories," said Lex, who is also currently working as choreographer for the restaging of the award-winning musical Broken Bridges, which will be staged in May.y

Facon Education Fair 2013, KL Convention Centre

Dubbed the largest and longest education road show in the country, the Facon Education Fair beginning next Saturday is the ideal platform for school leavers and working adults to check out the latest tertiary programmes and scholarship opportunities offered by international and local institutions of higher learning.

The fair, which kicks off at the KL Convention Centre on March 16 and 17, also serves to promote Malaysia as a hub for excellence in higher education.

Among the more than 1,000 exhibitors showcasing their latest offerings are HELP University, BERJAYA University College of Hospitality, Brickfields Asia College, SEGi University and INTI International University and Colleges.

Promoting the University of London's International Programmes, HELP University's head of centre Dr Lilian Chan said the programmes are being offered through HELP Academy in Damansara Heights and HELP College of Arts and Technology (HELP CAT) at the Fraser Business Park in Kuala Lumpur.

The five programmes are Bachelor of Science (Accounting and Finance), Bachelor of Science (Economics and Management), Bachelor of Science (Economics), Bachelor of Science (Business) and Bachelor of Science (Banking and Finance).

Be ready to get connected with the heads of schools, lecturers and students from BERJAYA University College of Hospitality at the fair as fun activities and live cooking demonstrations await you.

BERJAYA UCH Marketing and Business Development director Justin Yeoh said: "What is unique about studying in BERJAYA UCH is that its students are able to leverage on the Berjaya Corporation Bhd's diversity as a global conglomerate in related fields.

"Our students are given priority to secure internships and jobs within the BERJAYA Group of Companies."

Programmes from foundation to postgraduate levels are offered under six schools -- School of Culinary Arts, School of Hospitality; School of Tourism; School of Business; School of Liberal Arts; and School of Sports, Leisure and Lifestyle.

Another participating institution is Brickfields Asia College (BAC), which has guided students to achieve outstanding results in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and CLP programmes.

Other than graduating earlier, another distinct advantage of studying at BAC is that students will obtain an internationally recognised degree from one of its prestigious UK partner universities at a fraction of the cost in comparison to completing the entire degree in Britain.

Students who enrol in BAC's current intake will receive a free Asus Nexus 7 Tablet which will be constantly updated with digital notes to further enhance their education experience.

For INTI International University and Colleges, a solid foundation that leads to high employability, evident from a 2012 graduate employment rate of 96 per cent within six months of graduation, is central to the education that a student receives at INTI.

Here, an innovation-driven, global-oriented and career-focused learning experience has enabled students to shine and convince top employers like Public Bank, HSBC, IBM and KPMG that they are assets to any organisation.

Aside from lectures, many initiatives are in place to help INTI's students build up competencies and learn new skills. INTI's students have undertaken 125 innovative projects in the past year in collaboration with industry partners.

Students are also trained to develop soft skills that lead to strong leadership ability, confidence and the ability to analyse and strategise, in addition to being decisive and resourceful. Through industry-run workshops and forums that include employer career coaching sessions as well as interview, resume and grooming skills workshops students will be guided towards a rewarding and fulfilling career.

Students of INTI benefit not only from the institution's over 25 years of experience and strong track-record, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate International Universities provides.

SEGi University group marketing director Gary Tan Hong Guan said SEGi has recently been appointed by the Government as the Champion for Entry Point Project (EPP) 2 under the Education National Key Economic Area (NKEA) to develop integrated early childhood education (ECCE) in the country.

Aga Zaryan

Aga Zaryan
Gifted vocalist Aga Zaryan conveys the finest of the history of jazz to today’s audiences, continuing the traditions of great artists like Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell.

Aga Zaryan is a producer and lyricist but first and foremost, a highly charismatic artist and personality.

She has been successful in integrating ambitious artistic goals with popular appeal, recording four albums to date, all of which have earned gold, platinum or multi-platinum status in Poland. In 2008 she was honored with the Polish music industry’s most prestigious prize – the Fryderyk Chopin Award.

She was nominated for the title of Woman of The Year 2008 by Gazeta Wyborcza-Wysokie Obcasy, one of Poland’s most influential and widely circulated newspapers.

Aga was also named Jazz Vocalist of The Year in the European Jazz Forum Magazine’s yearly Jazz Top readers’ poll in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

She has appeared in clubs and at festivals in Poland, England, the USA, Germany, Norway, Israel, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, France, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Turkey, Portugal, Russia and Iceland.

Aga Zaryan born January 17, 1976 – is an internationally recognized jazz vocalist of the new generation.

She is known for her distinctive style, class and intimate approach to singing, with a characteristic lightness of phrasing and warm, slightly matte-toned voice.

Early Life:

Aga was born in Warsaw, Poland. Her father being a classical pianist, and her mother an English language educator and author, she travelled widely throughout Europe with her parents early on, spending part of her childhood and attending primary school in Manchester, UK.

In addition to classical works, both of Aga’s parents shared a passion for the music of Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Beatles, and various other popular artists. This provided Aga with exposure to wide range of contemporary music, starting at an early age.

After returning to Poland from the UK she became involved in playing tennis competitively, and went on to win the Warsaw Tennis Championship at the age of 14.

Musical Beginnings:

While still in her teens, she also developed a passion for music and theatre. After hearing the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, Aga decided to become a jazz vocalist.

She studied voice at the Fryderyk Chopin Public Secondary School of Music, and attended the Post-Secondary Jazz Studies Program there, graduating with honors.

Aga was awarded scholarships to attend international Jazz workshops on two occasions:

the Stanford Jazz Workshop and Jazz Camp West, both in the United States, where she was able to further develop her vocal skills.

Solo Career:

In 2002, Aga’s debut album “My Lullaby” – recorded with a group that included Tomasz Szukalski, Darek Oles, Michał Tokaj and Łukasz Żyta – was released.

This collection of jazz standards, sung with the backing of a jazz quartet in original and personal interpretations, brought her critical acclaim as one of Poland’s premier vocal talents.

Album was nominated for Jazz Record of the Year.

In 2006, Aga performed at the JVC Jazz Festival in Warsaw, opening for Branford Marsalis, an occasion which enabled her to introduce herself to a wider audience as a great performer and sophisticated jazz vocalist.

Since that time, Aga has appeared in clubs and at festivals in Poland, England, the USA, Germany, Israel, the Czech Republic, Sweden, France, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Turkey, Portugal, Russia and Iceland.

In 2006 the premiere of “Picking Up the Pieces” took place – an album recorded in Los Angeles with a first-rate international line-up of musicians: Larry Koonse (guitar), Munyungo Jackson (percussion), Nolan Shaheed (cornet) and Darek “Oles” Oleszkiewicz (double-bass).

“Picking Up the Pieces” is comprised of a set of eleven songs that tell the stories of women, illustrating their life, emotional and spiritual situations.

Thanks to it’s exceptionally intimate feel, the album was very well-recieved critically and enjoyed great commercial success, becoming a Bestseller which achieved double platinum status.

With the release of “Picking Up The Pieces”, Aga Zaryan established herself not only as one of Poland’s premiere jazz vocalists, but as an artist of international standing.

In early 2007, Aga travelled to the United States for a series of concerts with her American line-up, appearing in prestigious jazz venues such as Joe’s Pub in New York City and Blues Alley in Washington D.C. The concerts were enthusiastically received by the public, with critics across the ocean taking notice of Aga’s talent as well.

“Beauty is Dying”, recorded in the summer of 2007, is Aga Zaryan’s first album on which she sings in Polish. On it she is backed by a jazz piano trio, enhanced by a 17-piece string section with harp and oboe. The album contains nine works by Polish poets, depicting scenes of Warsaw at the time of the ’44 Uprising, selected and sung by Aga to original music composed and arranged by pianist Michał Tokaj. It has been described as lyrical and pulsing with emotion, the delicate string section and laid-back jazz trio melding perfectly with Zaryan’s singing.

A River Of People - A Sea Of Listeners:

On August 4th of that year, a one-of-a-kind concert took place at the Warsaw Uprising Museum in Liberty Park, where Aga performed the material from “Beauty is Dying” with the full lineup of musicians who took part in its recording. The concert was broadcast live on Polish Public TV and Radio, and attendance was so high that traffic in the immediate vicinity of the venue was gridlocked for hours, as a vast and steady river of people converged on the park. The culmination of the event saw over seven thousand people listening to Zaryan’s performance in concentrated silence.

The concert went down in history as somewhat of a sociological phenomenon, in that the audience spanned four generations, with first-hand witnesses to the events it honored in attendance, as well as their great-grandchildren.

“Beauty is Dying” was followed with appearances in prestigious concert halls and venues throughout Europe.

Later in 2008, Zaryan was accorded the Polish recording industry’s highest honors – The Fryderyk Chopin Award – for “Beauty is Dying”, as the year’s the Best Poetic Album.

“Live At Palladium"

This double-CD/DVD album is a recording of one of the concerts that took place at Warsaw’s Palladium Club during Aga Zaryan’s 2008 concert tour, on which she was joined by musicians who flew in from Los Angeles for the occasion. Aga opted for a somewhat atypical and rather delicate-sounding combination of instruments for the project: guitar, double bass, and percussion. The personel were guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Darek Oleszkiewicz, and Darryl Jackson on various percussion instruments.

The main body of the repertoire was comprised of songs from the albums “Picking Up the Pieces” and “My Lullaby”, some of them with completely new arrangements that took shape over the course of the tour. The recording is recognized as having truly captured the exceptional mood of these concerts, and highlights Aga’s fluid ease in performance. Several of the pieces are sung as duets, to the accompaniment of just double bass.

Album was welcomed as pure jazz, the essence of it.

It was commercial success as well earning triple platinum status!

Aga has finished recordings for her fifth album with her original compositions.

(Tips) Become a powerful speaker

Become a powerful speaker

THE fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias. No matter how effectively you visualise the crowd wearing only their underwear, traces of fear still remain for just about everyone. How do people effectively overcome that feeling of being tongue-tied and frozen when stepping up to speak to a group?

The fear of being judged, making a mistake, not measuring up, getting hurt mentally or physically can get in the way of a good performance (speech, seminar, sales presentation, etc).

Remember that people in the audience really want you to succeed. Nobody is standing there hoping you will be boring or bad. If you are coming from an authentic place, and you cover the material with clarity, you have won three-quarters of your inner battle with fear.

* Create Confidence in Yourself

The more sure you are of yourself, the less fear and hesitation you will exhibit when speaking in front of a group. When you know what you are saying has merit and the reason you are speaking publicly is because others want to know what you have to say, that will help to inspire your confidence. Remind yourself that you have something to share, and it doesn't matter if your knees shake and you stammer once or twice - if you don't make a big deal out of it, it is unlikely that anyone else will either.

The more you develop your own self-image, the more you can see that others are interested in your opinion. Remind yourself in your self-talk of all that is motivating you to go up and speak publicly. Remember even if you are just addressing a few colleagues that your opinion is being sought - which already means they are giving you a vote of confidence!

* Release Your Tension

Before going in front of the people you will be addressing, do everything you can to relax. Any technique that you typically use to calm and center yourself (such as deep breathing, visualisation, self-talk, or Tai Chi) can be used to help lower your heart rate and calm your nerves. Do not drink excessive amounts of caffeine.

While you will want to be alert, you do not want to be fidgety or in need of a bathroom. The classic "picture the crowd in their underwear" suggestion can help as well. It takes your mind off the task at hand and lets you put the audience in a different position psychologically; as you see them as harmless instead of something to be feared.

* Do Your Research

When you need to speak publicly, the more confidence you have in your material, the easier it will be for you to relax when discussing the subject matter. Take extra time going over every point to ensure that all your material is well-researched. Organise everything that you want to say in a logical fashion. Anticipate likely questions that will be asked, and give preliminary answers while you are speaking. Make sure that your research is broad enough so you will be able to answer most questions confidently. When you make the notes you will refer to, make sure that they are legible in the speaking situation. Nothing will derail your confidence faster than not being able to read all the fantastic research you have done.

* Practice, Practice, Practice

Just as any performance, public speaking requires practice. When you have to speak, take the time to rehearse. If you have access to willing humans, they are the best practice partners because they imitate the situation. If not, an audience of the canine, feline, or stuffed animal variety will work. Take your speech or presentation in front of a mirror.

Work on looking as confident, articulate, and professional as the words you will be delivering. Use your self-talk techniques before you practice, and if you have recruited a practice audience, ask for their feedback. Lather, rinse, repeat until you are speaking eloquently and confidently and you can visualise your audience's positive response. Soon you will find that public speaking isn't the ogre that you feared, but it can in fact be a highly rewarding and enjoyable experience!

Improve your interview technique

Improve your interview technique

A Job interview gives you a chance to shine. What you say and what you do is going to move you to the next round of consideration for employment, or knock you out of contention. It doesn't take much to make an impression - good or bad. If you haven't taken time to dress appropriately, or if you say the "wrong" thing, it will be over.

Take time to prepare your interview technique including knowing what's on your resume, being able to present why you are qualified for the job, why you are interested in the company, and practicing staying calm and focused. Remember that the image the interviewer has of you, when he first meets you, is the one that is going to last.

* Appearance

It is important to appear professional and attentive throughout the process. Before you leave for the interview, make sure you are dressed professionally, neatly groomed, your shoes polished, and you haven't overdone the perfume or aftershave. It is important not to "smell" during a face-to-face interview. Too much perfume, or not enough deodorant won't help either.

* Know the facts

Some applicants are not able to tell me their dates of employment, or what they actually did on a day-to-day basis at their job. Review your work history and make sure what you say matches what's on your resume. Take the time to learn about the company, and about the job you are applying for. * What you don't say

What you don't say can - and will - be used against you in a job interview. If you come to an interview chewing gum or drinking coffee, you will already have one strike against you. Not being dressed appropriately or having scuffed shoes will give you a second strike. Talking or texting on your cell phone or listening to an iPod while waiting to be called for the interview, may be your final strike and you could be done with your candidacy before you even say a word. * What you do say

Your verbal communications are important. Don't use slang. Speak clearly and definitely. If you need to think about a response to an interview question, that is fine. It is better to think before you talk, than to stumble over your words. Practice answering some interview questions so you're comfortable responding the basics.

* Listen

It can be easy to get distracted during a job interview. It is stressful and you are in the hot seat when it comes to having to respond to questions. That said, if you do your best to listen to what the interviewer is asking, it will be easier to frame appropriate responses. TIPS

Non-verbal Communication during an Interview

NON-VERBAL communication is as important as verbal communication.

According to studies, "body language comprises 55% of the force of any response, whereas the verbal content only provides 7%, and paralanguage; or the intonation - pauses and sighs given when answering, represents 38% of the emphasis." The evaluation of your nonverbal communication starts as soon as you walk into the company's lobby, and continue until the interview is finished.

If your non-verbal communication skills aren't up to par, it won't matter how well you answer the questions. Here's how to do it right:

* Make eye contact with the interviewer for a few seconds at a time.

* Smile and nod (at appropriate times) when the interviewer is talking, but don't overdo it. Don't laugh unless the interviewer does first.

* Be polite and keep an even tone to your speech. Don't be too loud or too quiet.

* Don't slouch. You will look too casual and relaxed.

* Do relax and lean forward a little, so you appear interested and engaged.

* Listen, pay attention, and be interested.

* Don't interrupt.

* Stay calm. Keep your emotions to yourself and do not show anger or frown.

* Don't let your arms fly around when you are making a point.

* Hold a pen and a pad, or rest an arm on the chair, so you look comfortable.

* Remember your manners, and thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet you.

Keiko Matsui

Keiko Matsui
Keiko Matsui is a citizen of the world. She tours relentlessly and has brought her music to virtually every corner of the globe. Her music transcends boundary and her unique melting pot of musical influences have garnered her a devout international following. “Music has no borders and it creates a oneness among people,” confides the Japanese born pianist, composer and producer. “There have been many occasions when I have felt like music saved me. There is a connection between my fans and I and together in my music we are sharing harmony.” An activist by nature, Keiko (pronounced Kay-Koe means ‘happy, celebratory child’ in Japanese) has not only used her music to speak to the world but she has lent her voice to causes championed by organizations like The United Nations World Food Programme, the Be March Marrow Registry and The National Donor Program and Marrow Foundation. With over a million and a half albums sold and scores of sold out concerts across the globe, Keiko Matsui is one of the brightest stars in instrumental music. Her free spirit and creative genius have afforded her the luxury to share the stage with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis to Hugh Masakela and Bob James. On January 25, 2011 Shanachie Entertainment will release The Road…, Keiko’s long awaited, self produced and 22nd album released in the US.

“Keiko Matsui is beyond category,” states Danny Weiss, VP of Jazz A&R for Shanachie Entertainment. “She is a great jazz player, of course, but her music has such strong classical, world and new age influences that the result is truly unique. But it is in her compositions that Keiko’s genius outshines all others – her amazing melodies are simply breathtaking!”

The Road… is Keiko Matsui’s first new recording in four years and a follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 South African inspired Moyo, which features Hugh Masakela among others. “It is unusual for me to have such a long space between my albums so when I started recording this CD it was like a miracle,” says Keiko. “It is also the first time that I invited my band members from the road who have been going through my survival tour!” The Road… is a riveting collection of timeless, passionate, cathartic, emotional and exotic melodies, lush harmonies and global rhythms. “I have been constantly on the go touring and supporting my family,” shares the strikingly beautiful and introspective single mother of two. “When I started this project I spent a lot of time reflecting on the soul and where it comes from. I am on a new journey and have come this far and I still find that this life is wonderful…even the challenges create a beautiful tapestry and the road continues…” Keiko’s soul searching includes the ethereal shape-shifting title track which set the tone for the cinematic compositions to follow.

One of the most salient and recognizable elements of Keiko Matsui’s music is her gift for crafting memorable melodies, which she describes as a “mirror or reflection of herself at any given moment.’”“I have always wanted to write melodies that stay in people’s hearts like traditional music or classical music, where the music lives on for centuries.” Keiko exhibits her affinity for melody on The Road’s opening track “Secret Pond,” which was inspired by a letter she once received.

“A fan in the US sent me a note and told me that my music brings people back to the roots of their soul,” shares the soft-spoken yet commanding pianist. “His words have stayed with me and this song is about where we all begin our journey in this life.” “Embrace & Surrender” is another song that magnifies Keiko’s unmatched ability to make a song sing and exude tenderness and warmth. Her emotional attachment to the meaning behind this song transcends every note. “Playing this melody I expressed so much emotion that I was in tears. It is about the love that is found in you that is really deep but not carnal. There is something that connects everyone. We all have the ability to send love and receive love and we are all surrounded by a love from the universe.”

A high point on The Road… is Keiko Matsui’s collaboration with revered Cameroonian bassist, guitarist and vocalist Richard Bona, who co-wrote the songs “Nguea Wonja” and “Touching Peace.” “Richard is such a great artist and I believe that he has a special spiritual element that he connects to that when he plays and when he sings I feel like I am hearing an angel,” declares Keiko. The spirited dance-inducing “Nguea Wonja” (which means to ‘take pride in the road you are traveling on your journey’) and the divine ballad “Touching Peace” affirm the virtuosic brilliance and versatility of both artists. Bona also joins Keiko on the impressionistic “Falcon’s Wing,” which shines light on the pianist’s classical influences. “I love falcons,” she says. “I saw a beautiful picture of one that inspired me and following the song “Secret Pond” it was a natural progression to take flight and fly.”

Keiko Matsui is a consummate artist and freely at home in any musical context. As The Road…demonstrates she borrows from such diverse idioms as jazz, classical, rock, blues, world music, traditional music of the world and beyond. Keiko draws upon the appeal of all of these influences on “Bohemian Concerto,” an exhilarating show stopping number and the final song she composed for The Road… “This song came to me at the last minute while I was on a three-week Eastern European tour,” explains Keiko. “I had written the melody in a notebook but somehow the song just stayed in my head and I was singing it the entire tour. I could hear the string arrangements and everything. I felt like something was telling me to record this song.”

The road of life is sometimes circular and Keiko Matsui returns to her early beginnings on The Road…, joining forces with one of the first musicians she ever recorded with, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, who appears on four of the album’s tracks, including the deeply moving “Awakening.” “It was great to finally connect with him. He was the first drummer I recorded with in the 80s along with Nathan East when I was a student. The two also later joined me on my US recording debut A Drop of Water. “Awakening” also features saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who Keiko records with for the first time on The Road… He also appears on the song “Affirmation.” “His music and spirituality are always connected,” says Keiko. He is wonderful.” The idea of spirituality and music being intertwined is a recurring theme in Keiko Matsui’s music. She has often said that when she creates music it is as if she is offering her music as a prayer.

Keiko’s composing ritual is one of patience and dedication. “I always set aside special time for composing charts,” explains the dynamic artist. “I sit in front of the piano in a quiet space and wait to hear a melody come from somewhere. It may take all day but when I hear it I catch it and take note.” Although Keiko has always had a connection to music it was not something she originally thought she would do professionally until she came to the US and experienced the responses from the audiences. She does not come from a musical family; her father was a businessman and her mother had an affinity for traditional Japanese dance but both supported her musical endeavors once they gleaned the happiness it brought their daughter.

Keiko Matsui made her US recording debut in 1987 with the recording A Drop of Water. Under Northern Lights followed in 1989 and her subsequent albums of note include, No Borders (1990), Night Waltz(1991), Cherry Blossom (1992), Doll (1994), Sapphire (1995) and Dream Walk (1996), which remained on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart for over 15 months and further cemented her reputation as a force to reckon with. In 1997, she launched a tour dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, and released a four-song CD entitled A Gift of Hope that benefited the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization. Her music was prominently featured in Say It, Fight It, Cure It, a Lifetime special profiling several courageous women battling breast cancer. “My fans come from all backgrounds and I have been approached by various foundations to join in their efforts. When I hear of a cause that resonates with me that I can dedicate my music to then I am always willing. It is my way to show gratitude and give back,” states Keiko Matsui. In 1999, the pianist performed at “A Golden Moment,” a skating concert featuring Olympic figure skaters Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Ekaterina Gordeeva, and Katarina Witt, which benefited the Susan G. Komen Foundation. 1998 saw the release of her album Full Moon And The Shrine which was accompanied by the acclaimed PBS-TV special Keiko Matsui: Light Above The Trees. In 2000, the special earned Keiko a National Smooth Jazz Award for “Best Long-Form Video Achievement” and she was honored with an award for “Best Female Artist.” She claimed the award again in 2001. During this time she released the poignant recording The Ring, which was meant to communicate a message of peace, compassion, and humanity to listeners around the world.

Keiko Matsui’s CD Deep Blue (2001) topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts for three consecutive weeks. Keiko is the first Japanese artist to achieve this honor. In 2003 she enjoyed success with her recording The Piano, which featured reinventions of some of her most loved original works. In 2004 the title track of Keiko’s Wildflower was used to support the United Nations World Food Programme’s efforts in Africa. “I decided I wanted to support the WFP after learning about the tremendous problems in Africa and how humanitarian assistance can change people’s lives for the better,” shares the activist.” Keiko has also collaborated with A3M (Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches) in numerous charity concerts. In addition proceeds from her 2001 mini-CD, A Gift of Life, went to The National Donor Program and Marrow Foundation in support of A3M. In December 2009, the highly sought-after pianist was asked to put together a Christmas show at the Blue Note club in Tokyo, which was a major success and in November 2010 she made her highly anticipated debut at the Blue Note in NY, which was sold out. Keiko also recently recorded and toured with Bob James on a 4 Hand Piano project that will be released in 2011. Keiko depth as a composer has also allowed her to contribute music to soundtracks in Japan, the U.S. and Russia.

Fortunately for us The Road continues for Keiko Matsui and she is inviting us along for the ride. “Music, touring and recording are not like a job for me but more like my calling. It is these experiences that energize me,” says Keiko. “ I look forward to sharing the oneness with people when I am on the road. We all need to stop fighting and come together. Music has a magical power that brings people together and I am hoping my music will help to bring harmony to the earth. This album is so special and important to me. I hope my music can reach inside my fans and touch and move their souls.”

13 Terrorists Bodies Found In Kampung Tanduo

The bodies of 13 armed terrorists were found in Kampung Tanduo during a 'sweeping and mopping' operation Wednesday following the offensive launched by Malaysian security forces on the stronghold of the intruders in the village.

One of the bodies was that of the terrorist who was shot dead in an exchange of fire with the security forces at 6.45am today, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein at 4pm, Ahmad Zahid said nine of the bodies were found in an open grave covered with pieces of planks.

Several photographs of the 'Op Daulat' taken by the security forces were distributed to the media, including photographs of the terrorists' bodies in a grave.

Also distributed was the photograph of a forensic personnel who was attacked by the intruders while inspecting a grave in the village and firearms seized by the security forces.

At the same time, Ahmad Zahid criticised the attitude of the social media that belittled the action of the security forces' front line by describing it as a drama.

"These photographs show that our security forces have the efficiency to carry out the operation. This is not a drama," he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said there were two clashes around the village as members of the military forces and police carried out sweeping and mopping operations.

"At 6.45 this morning, our troops had clashed with the intruders and our security forces shot dead a member of the intruding group.

"At 1.45pm, our forensic team was attacked by the group of intruders while investigating the graveyard where the bodies of the intruders were buried in the village," he said, confirming that no member of the security forces had been injured.

He said the joint operation by the police and military had also found various firearms belonging to the foreign terrorists.
