10 Ways To Stay Fit During The Holidays

10 Ways To Stay Fit During The Holidays
By Wendy Innes

It seems inevitable. As the holidays roll around all the parties and pastries add up to the holiday bulge that, come spring time, has to be worked off in time for swimsuit season. But it doesn't have to be this way. Follow these 10 tips to stay fit during the holiday season and have a head start on that bikini next year.

Eat Before The Party

One of the biggest culprits of the holiday bulge is the constant partying. People go to parties and overindulge…they almost feel obligated to. But by eating a healthy meal before going to a party, people can avoid showing up ravenously hungry and then gorging on extra pie. Be sure to eat a meal that is balanced with plenty of protein and whole grains so that full feeling will last.

Drink Before Eating

The human stomach is only so big, and as such, it has a finite volume. By drinking a glass of water or herbal tea before eating a meal, especially with all those calorie laden holiday favorites, the ability to pig out is cut down significantly. Then people can eat a small amount, which won't derail the year's diet plan.

Treat Yourself To Some Chocolate

The quickest way to diet disaster is restriction. A diet that is too restrictive, especially during the holidays, becomes impossible to live with. But by eating a small amount of something indulgent each day, such as chocolate, people don't feel so deprived. Opt for a high percentage of cacao, which will have less sugar and fat, but will have all the beneficial antioxidants that make chocolate healthy. Just be sure not to go crazy, an ounce or two is all that is needed.

Get Packing

No not a suitcase, but that is always fun. People often find themselves busier than ever during the holidays. All of the parties, shopping and cooking can really eat away at time spent in the gym. So if this happens, pack as much activity into the time available. Ben Greenfield, 2008 Personal Trainer of the year, recommends doing exercises that move as many body parts as possible at one time and to do those exercises as fast as possible to maximize time. Powerful, explosive movements will ensure the most calories burned in the shortest time.

Wake Up To Exercise

Usually when people wake up in the morning they are thinking about the coffee pot or getting in the shower, but research has shown that by waking up and exercising first thing in the morning (think rolling out of bed to do crunches on the floor) that the body burns almost 20 percent more calories throughout the day. This doesn't mean to skip the regular workout during the day, but just 15 minutes in the morning will not only help get a person wake up, it will also provide an extra metabolism boost that is definitely a plus during the holidays.

Keep A Food Log

This is a great idea throughout the year, but the best way to know where someone is consuming extra calories is to keep a food log. A simple notebook will work and books are available with nutritional information for nearly everything, if that info isn't on the food package (such as in the case of fresh produce). It is essential to keep track of the amount of food eaten as well, because portion size definitely matters. But in just a few days it will be easy to see where a person's diet can be improved.

Be Sure To Eat

This may seem a little odd, but the body needs fuel, so be sure to avoid skipping meals. Often during the holidays, people try and skimp on food throughout the day, such as skipping breakfast, because they will be pigging out at a party later that evening. The problem is that the body needs a steady supply of fuel all day long. So this will leave a person feeling sluggish all day, and then lead to overeating at the party. In fact, research has shown that those who skip breakfast are a staggering 450 percent more likely to be overweight. So eat a healthy diet throughout the day, and indulge responsibly at parties.

Drink 2 To 1

There are mountains of research that demonstrates that wine is good for people. But it can also be dehydrating. So to avoid becoming dehydrating and possibly having a hangover the following morning, drink two glasses of water for every glass of wine. This will help avoid dehydration, as well as avoiding intoxication because the liver will have time to process the alcohol in the wine before more is consumed.

Listen To Weight Loss

One of the biggest contributors to weight gain is the stress hormone cortisol. But research suggests that listening to music helps to lower levels of cortisol in the body. The holidays are loaded with stress, from shopping to guests to cooking, it can all add up. So load some soothing music onto the MP3 player and listen while doing all those holiday tasks. The result is a direct effect on weight loss.

Spice It Up

Eating spicy food has been shown to increase metabolism slightly. So find new ways of adding a kick to all those holiday recipes. Things like red pepper flakes, hot sauce and hot peppers are all great choices. Guests will appreciate the metabolism boost too.

The holiday season doesn't mean that all of the health and fitness goals a person works for all year have to go out the window. By following these 10 tips, people can stay on track and enjoy the holidays too.

10 Reasons You're Exercising But Not Losing Weight

10 Reasons You're Exercising And Not Losing Weight
By MaryAnn DePietro

If you started an exercise program in part to lose weight and the scale is not budging, it can be frustrating. Not making progress can cause you to lose motivation and even stop your workouts. Not only is exercising important, but how you exercise is also key to weight loss. If you’re exercising and not seeing the weight loss results you want, here are 10 reasons why.

Not Working Out Hard Enough

Simply put the harder you workout, the more calories you will burn. Exercise intensity is measured in two ways including perceived exertion and heart rate. Perceived exertion means how hard you feel you are exercising. Another more objective way to measure intensity is by heart rate. Working out at 50 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate is considered moderate intensity, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. If you are not seeing any weight loss, consider increasing the intensity of your workout.

If you always do the same routine every time you work out, your body gets used to it and is not challenged any longer. When your body is used to the same exercise routine you’re likely burning fewer calories than you did when you first started. Consider changing your routine every two months. Trying something new can also help prevent boredom and injuries from repetition.

Eating Too Much Before And After Your Workout

Eating something light before a workout may be acceptable, but eating a lot more than you normally do because you know you’ll be exercising may not be a good idea. Also, exercise can make you hungry. If you put the calories right back into your body after a workout, your canceling out what you just burned and may not see not weight loss.

Stressing Out

Everyone has some stress in their lives, but could stress be preventing you from losing weight? According to Harvard Medical School, research indicates weight gain is connected to stress. The hormone cortisol is released when you feel stress, which may increase appetite and cause you to overeat. If stress is high in your life, try stress reduction techniques, such as message, deep breathing and meditation.

Skipping Strength Work

When it comes to exercise, strength training is an important piece of the puzzle to help you lose weight. According to the Mayo Clinic, as you age muscle mass can decrease and body fat can increase. Adding strength training exercise twice a week can help prevent loss of muscles and increase the amount of calories you burn even at rest.

Inconsistency

Finding the time to exercise on a regular basis can be a challenge. If you find you’re skipping workouts frequently or only exercising on weekends, inconsistency may be the problem. Take an honest look at how often you workout and determine what’s getting in the way.

Mistaking Thirst For Hunger

Throughout the course of your day and especially after exercise, you need to be drinking enough fluids. Sometimes the body can mistakes thirst for hunger. It’s not uncommon to reach for something to eat when it’s really water your body needs.

You Are Not Doing Cardio Long Enough

Although any exercise is better than none, if you’re trying to lose weight, you may not be working out long enough. Cardiovascular exercise burns calories. The longer you workout the more calories you’ll burn. How long you need to work out to lose weight may vary depending on your age, what type of exercise you’re doing and the intensity of your workout. According to Harvard School of Public Health, people trying to lose weight should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.

Lack Of Sleep

You may be aware of problems associated with lack of sleep, such as fatigue and decreased alertness, but lack of sleep may also be hindering your weight loss goals. Too little sleep can affect both the type of food you eat and how much. Lack of sleep also affects stress and hormone levels, which also contribute to trouble losing weight. Although individual sleep needs vary, the average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep each night as recommend by the National Sleep Foundation.

Going By The Calorie Counter On The Fitness Equipment

It may not be a good idea to rely on exercise machines for an accurate assessment of the number of calories you burned during your workout. Fitness machines, such as the stair climber, elliptical and treadmill often overestimate calories burned. Instead of measuring your workouts by calories burned, measure it by time and intensity.

If you are not seeing any weight loss, or you have reached a plateau, making a few of the above adjustments to your exercise routine may be all you need. Even if the scale is not budging just yet, sticking with your exercise program has many benefits including reducing your risk of certain illnesses and increasing overall health.

Highway tunnel ceiling collapses in Japan

Concrete ceiling panels fell onto moving vehicles deep inside a long Japanese highway tunnel, and authorities confirmed nine deaths before suspending rescue work Monday while the roof was being reinforced to prevent more collapses.

Two vehicles caught fire in the accident Sunday morning, and heavy smoke initially hindered rescue efforts. The location of the accident about 1.7 kilometers (a mile) inside the 4.7-kilometer (3-mile) long Sasago Tunnel was also making the work difficult.

The search was suspended Monday morning while the highway operator does work to support the remaining panels in the ceiling, said Jun Goto, an official at the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. It's expected to resume by afternoon.

Goto said it's not clear if there are other survivors.

Police and the highway operator Central Japan Expressway Co. were investigating why the concrete panels collapsed. The size of each panel, how many fell and other details about the collapse were not immediately released.

The nine dead were traveling in three vehicles in the tunnel about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Tokyo on a highway that links the capital to central Japan. The tunnel opened in 1977 and is one of many in the mountainous country.

Company President and CEO Takekazu Kaneko said that the company was inspecting other tunnels of similar structure, including a parallel tunnel for traffic going in the opposite direction. Both sections of the highway were shut down indefinitely.

Two people suffered injuries in the collapse.

Shila Amzah to record in China

Shila Amzah to record in China

Not many people know this but Shila Amzah almost pulled out of Asian Wave 2012 two months before the competition.

The reason? She though the audience would not be receptive towards her wearing a tudung.

As it turned out, Shila had nothing to be worried about.

Performers & Artistes Rights (M) Sdn Bhd (PRISM) general manager Ong Peng Chu, who was instrumental in getting her into the competition, convinced her to stay on.

"He told me that the audience would be more interested in my singing and not my hair. He assured me that it would be all right so, I went ahead," said Shila when met recently at Starhill Kuala Lumpur.

Still, when she made it to the finals, the organiser requested that she remove here tudung.

"They said since I had been wearing the scarf throughout the preliminaries and semi finals, it would be nice to see me without my tudung.

However, after explaining to them that I wear the tudung for religious reasons, they understood and allowed me to continue," she said, adding that she was prepared to withdraw if the organiser had insisted that she remove her scarf.

The competition, held in Shanghai, drew 15 established contestants, including several recording artistes from Australia, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Thailand, Kazakhstan and host country China.

Shila readily admitted that when she took part, she did not expect to get that far, especially when the local Chinese media there had predicted local star Chang Shilei as the winner.

"My dad advised me not to treat it like a competition so when I performed I was focussed on entertaining the crowd," said Shila, whose real name is Nur Shahila Amir Hamzah.

The daughter of popular singer N.D.Lala performed five songs, including Set Fire To The Rain by Adele and Wang Lee Hom's Forever Love in the preliminaries.

For the finals, she performed three songs - Jaclyn Victor's Gemilang and Grenade by Bruno Mars. It was the final song, Zheng Fu, made popular by Na Ying that got the judges, the host and the audience literally on their feet.

Some of the judges, like Cantopop superstar Alan Tam, Malaysian-born singer Eric Moo and celebrated Chinese composer Gao Xiaosong, praised her performance, saying that she gave them goosebumps.

After watching her perform Zheng Fu on YouTube, which had garnered more than a million viewers, I had goosebumps myself. I have no idea what the lyrics means but I found myself watching it countless times.

Other judges were Japan's bossa nova queen Lisa Ono, K- pop star Lee Min-woo and Hong Kong celebrity Hacken Lee.

"The song Zheng Fu means (to) conquer. It was suggested by Peng Chu and supported by my dad. I rehearsed for about a month to make sure that my pronunciation was spot-on," said Shila, who attended Chinese school up to Standard Two.

After emerging the champion, Shila spent a few days in Shanghai. She was surprised when people approached her on the streets.

"They recognised me because of the competition and my tudung. I was surprised by their gesture," said Shila, who bought more than 30 new scarves in Shanghai.

Since Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are not allowed in China, Shila's Chinese friends in Malaysia had uploaded her old videos (pre-tudung) on Youku, a Chinese version of YouTube.

"When they saw my old videos, they commented that I look pretty without scarf but better with it," said Shila. Indeed, her Chinese fans in Shanghai have begun to style themselves with scarf a'la Shila.

The prize money of RM5 million will be shared among the top three winners, including first runner-up Chang Shilei and second runner-up Hou Jun. She added that the money, which is sponsored by Shanghai Media Group (SME), would be used to help mould her into a popular Asian act through recording albums, promotions and stage performances.

Shila will be alternating her base between Kuala Lumpur and China to record her first Mandarin album soon.

"It will include the songs I sang in Shanghai, including Patah Seribu, which has been translated into Mandarin."

Shila said SME had heard about her recent win at Anugerah Industri Muzik where she had bagged the Best Song award for Patah Seribu which she composed, wrote the lyrics and performed herself.

She has also been invited by Eric Moo to open his concert in China.

Shila also had a successful stint last week where she performing to a high-end crowd at an event billed "A Journey Through Time" organised by Starhill Gallery.

Shila was 7 when she sang on television for the first time. But she was not alone. Her famous father, who was popular in the 1970's was her duet partner. With her parents' support, Shila slowly honed her singing skills, performing at weddings and events.

She had entered many singing competitions throughout her teenage years and came closest to winning one when she emerged first runner-up at 8TV's One In A Million in 2008.
