Barack Obama wins election for second term as president

President Barack Obama handily defeated Gov. Mitt Romney and won himself a second term on Tuesday after a bitter and historically expensive race that was primarily fought in just a handful of battleground states. Obama beat Romney after nabbing almost every one of the 12 crucial battleground states.

Barack Obama

In a sweeping victory speech early Wednesday morning, Obama thanked every American who voted, and vowed to work with leaders from both parties to tackle the country's challenges.

"Our economy is recovering, a decade of war is ending, a long campaign is now over," he told a crowd of cheering supporters in Chicago. "And whether I earned your vote or not, I have listened to you, I have learned from you and you have made me a better president." Obama added he has "never been more hopeful about America. ... We're not as divided as our politics suggest. We remain more than a collection of blue states and red states."

Romney conceded in Boston in an earlier speech around 1 a.m. ET. "Like so many of you, Paul [Ryan] and I have left everything on the field. We have given our all to this campaign," Romney said. "I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead your country in another direction. But the nation chose another leader." Romney congratulated the president and his campaign on their victory.

The Romney campaign's last-ditch attempt to put blue-leaning Midwestern swing states in play failed as Obama's Midwestern firewall sent the president back to the White House for four more years. Obama picked up the swing states of New Hampshire, Michigan, New Mexico, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Ohio. Of the swing states, Romney picked up only North Carolina. Florida is still too close to call, but even if Romney won the state, Obama still handily beat him in the Electoral College vote. The popular vote will most likely be narrower than the president's decisive Electoral College victory.

The Obama victory marks an end to a years-long campaign that saw historic advertisement spending levels, countless rallies and speeches, and three much-watched debates.

The Romney campaign cast the election as a referendum on Obama's economic policies, frequently comparing him to former President Jimmy Carter and asking voters the Reagan-esque question of whether they are better off than they were four years ago. But the Obama campaign pushed back, blanketing key states such as Ohio early on with ads painting him as a multimillionaire more concerned with profits than people. The Obama campaign also aggressively attacked Romney on reproductive rights issues, tying Romney to a handful of Republican candidates who made controversial comments about rape and abortion.

The ads were one reason Romney faced a steep likeability problem for most of the race, until his expert performance at the first presidential debate in Denver in October. After that debate, and a near universal panning of Obama's performance, Romney caught up with Obama in national polls, and almost closed his favorability gap with the president. In polls, voters consistently gave him an edge over Obama on who would handle the economy better and create more jobs, even as they rated Obama higher on caring about the middle class.

But the president's Midwestern firewall—and the campaign's impressive grassroots operation—carried him through. Ohio tends to vote a bit more Republican than the nation as a whole, but Obama was able to stave off that trend and hold an edge there over Romney, perhaps due to the president's support of the auto bailout three years ago. Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan all but moved to Ohio in the last weeks of the campaign, trying and ultimately failing to erase Obama's lead there.

A shrinking electoral battleground this year meant that only 12 states were really seen as in play, and both candidates spent most of their time and money there. Though national polls showed the two candidates in a dead heat, Obama consistently held a lead in the states that mattered. That, and his campaign's much-touted get-out-the-vote efforts and overall ground game may be what pushed Obama over the finish line.

Now, Obama heads back to office facing what will most likely be bitterly partisan negotiations over whether the Bush tax cuts should expire. The House will still be majority Republican, with Democrats maintaining their majority in the Senate.

The loss may provoke some soul searching in the Republican Party. This election was seen as a prime opportunity to unseat Obama, as polls showed Americans were unhappy with a sluggish economy, sky-high unemployment and a health care reform bill that remained widely unpopular. Romney took hardline positions on immigration, federal spending and taxes during the long Republican primary when he faced multiple challenges from the right. He later shifted to the center in tone on many of those issues, but it's possible the primary painted him into a too-conservative corner to appeal to moderates during the general election. The candidate also at times seemed unable to effectively counter Democratic attacks on his business experience and personal wealth.

Better to be underweight than overweight - Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld thinks being overweight is ''much more dangerous'' than being underweight.

The controversial designer - who is currently creative director of Chanel - believes no one in fashion would want to work with a girl who is anorexic and he worries about people who eat junk food more than those who under-eat.

He told Channel 4 News: ''Nobody works with anorexic girls, that's nothing to do with fashion.

''There are less than one per cent of anorexic girls, but there more than 30 per cent of girls in France, - I don't know about England - that are much, much overweight. And it is much more dangerous and very bad for the health.

''So I think today with the junk food in front of the TV it's something dangerous for the health of the girl.''

The German-born designer - who previously suggested Pippa Middleton should not show her face - was also unsure about the fashion credentials of David Cameron's wife Samantha.

He added: ''In France, the image of Mrs. Cameron is unknown.''

Karl attended the opening of Chanel's Little Black Jacket photography exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London last night (11.10.12), where guests included Keira Knightley and Carine Roitfeld.

10 most memorable Bond theme songs

10 most memorable Bond theme songs

Goldfinger (1964)

1. Composed by John Barry, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the song was performed by Shirley Bassey for the film's opening and closing title sequences as well as the soundtrack album release. The single release of the song gave Bassey her only Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hit, peaking at No. 8 and at No. 2 for four weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart. In the United Kingdom, the single reached No. 21. In 2008, the single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

You Only Live Twice (1967)

2. Performed by Nancy Sinatra, with music and production provided by John Barry and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, the song is widely recognised for its striking opening bars. It is considered to be among the best Bond theme songs and has become one of Nancy's best known hits. The song has been extensively covered by artistes such as Coldplay, Soft Cell, Bjork and Shirley Bassey. Meanwhile, Robbie Williams re-recorded the opening bars of the song for his hit Millennium.

We Have All the Time In The World (1969)

3. Sung by Louis Armstrong, its music is composed by John Barry and lyrics by Hal David. The title is taken from Bond's final words in both the novel and the film, spoken after his wife's death. The song was not registered in the music rating charts in the UK when first released, only becoming well known 25 years later as part of a Guinness beer commercial after My Bloody Valentine chose to cover it for charity. Armstrong's version was then re-released and reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart. In 2005, a BBC survey showed it is the third-most-popular love song played at weddings.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

4. The soundtrack was composed by John Barry, with lyrics by Don Black, for the 7th James Bond film of the same name. It was the second Bond theme performed by Shirley Bassey, after Goldfinger in 1964. The song was also recorded in Italian by Bassey as Una Cascata di Diamanti (Vivo Di Diamanti).

Live and Let Die (1973)

5. Performed by Paul McCartney & Wings, it was one of their most successful singles, and the most successful Bond theme to that point, charting at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart. Commissioned specifically for the movie and credited to Paul McCartney and his wife Linda, it reunited McCartney with Beatles producer George Martin, who both produced the song and arranged the orchestral break. It has been covered by several bands, with the Guns N' Roses' version being the most popular. Both McCartney's and Guns N' Roses' versions were nominated for Grammys. This year, McCartney was awarded the Million-Air Award from BMI Publishing for more than four million performances of the song in America.

A View To A Kill (1985)

6. This is the 13th single by Duran Duran. It remains the only Bond theme song to have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also made it to No. 2 for three weeks on the UK Singles Chart. In 1986, John Barry and Duran Duran were nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for this song. It was the last track that the original five members of Duran Duran recorded together until their reunion 16 years later in 2001. It was played at their final performance in 1985 at Live Aid in Philadelphia. The single was at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time they performed it.

Die Another Day (2002)

8. This theme to the Bond film of the same name by American singer-songwriter Madonna was released as a single in late 2002 by Warner Bros. Records. It also marked Madonna's 20th anniversary from her first album release in 1983. It peaked at No. 8 in the United States and No. 3 in the United Kingdom, selling 175,000 copies - making it the most successful Bond theme since Duran Duran's A View to a Kill. The song was included on the soundtrack album of the same name and later included on her 2003 studio album, American Life ,and her 2009 greatest hits compilation, Celebration.

Nobody Does It Better (1977)

9. Nobody spelled out the sexiness of the Bond films better than Carly Simon. The song was written by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager and holds the distinction of being the first Bond theme that did not carry the same name as the accompanying film, The Spy Who Loved Me.

Skyfall, 2012

10. Adele digs in to the classic sound of Bond in this soundtrack featuring a brassy and soulful tune alongside the work of Shirley Bassey. And with the name of Adele attached, the song instantly flooded pop radio and stormed the digital sales charts. Marking Adele's first song after her hit album 21, it rocketed straight to the top of the iTunes charts.
